The meaning of the name:
VAN DEN HOUTEN
(from the woods)
1. It's an addressname.
That means that the surname tells us where he was coming from.
Examples are: van der Molen (Mill), van de Heide (Heathland), van der Velde
(Farming Fields), van der Zee (Ocean), etc.
2. So it's difficult to say where our name-giver came from or what he did.
Was he living in the woods? Was he a Lumberjack? Was he a Forester? Was he a Hunter?
Or did he own a piece of forest? I dont know. Who knows, may tell me.
3. Also many variants for the name "van den Houten" are known.
As well as for the intercalation "van den": van, van de, den, ten.
As for the surename "Houten": Hout, Houte, Houter, Houtte, Haut, Hautte, etc.
Also the name "du Bois" is mentioned as an ancestor of "van den Houten".
"Du Bois" is France for "van den Houten".
So it is possible that our ancestors came from Belgium or France.
Emigrants to English-speaking countries sometimes changed their name in to "Wood".

Ger Klein wrote to me:
You have a TopoName. By many places in the Netherlands is or was somewhere around a
little forest they called 't Hout. The people who lived there where called van't Hout (from't
Hout) and his descendants called than 'van Houten'. And so there are many variations.
