Tijdens de Olympische Spelen in Helsinki wint Emil Zatopek voor Tsjechoslowakije goud
op de 5.000 meter, de 10.000 en de marathon.
31 Mei - Het sprookjesbos De Efteling in Kaatsheuvel wordt geopend.
3 Oktober - Eerste Britse atoomtest in Australië -- hiermee wordt het Verenigd Koninkrijk de
derde atoommacht, naast de Verenigde Staten (1945) en de Sovjet-Unie (1949). Frankrijk en
China volgen later. In ditzelfde jaar (17 november) doen de Verenigde Staten de
eerste proef met een waterstofbom, vele malen krachtiger dan de atoombom. Dit wordt
het begin van een van de meest bedreigende onderdelen van de koude oorlog, de
kernwapenwedloop. Eerdere pogingen om atoomwapens door een supernationale organisatie
te laten beheren, lopen stuk op onderling wantrouwen van de grote mogendheden. In 1952
wordt door de VN de ontwapeningscommissie in het leven geroepen.
4 Oktober - De Brusselse Noord-Zuidverbinding is een feit. Ze wordt ingereden door
Koning Boudewijn.
25 Oktober - De Geïllustreerde Pers brengt het eerste exemplaar van het weekblad Donald
Duck uit als bijlage van het damesblad Margriet. Een geniale marketing-vondst.
17 November - Bovengenoemde Amerikaanse proef met waterstofbom.
25 November - In Londen gaat het toneelstuk Mousetrap van Agatha Christie in première.
Het zal tot maart 1974 onafgebroken worden gespeeld, daarmee de langst lopende
toneelvoorstelling ter wereld.
5 December - De eerste keer dat Sinterklaas op de Nederlandse televisie wordt ontvangen.
