Februari-Juli - Bij Verdun sneuvelen in totaal 600.000 soldaten zonder noemenswaardige
militaire voortgang.
15 Maart - De Duitse Generaal Von Bissung vaardigt het besluit uit dat de universiteit van
Gent voortaan vernederlandst wordt. Dit besluit wordt na de Eerste Wereldoorlog echter
ongedaan gemaakt, als francophone reactie, ondanks de belofte van Koning Albert I de
taalgelijkheid te respecteren. Men zou nog moeten wachten tot 1930 om de Gentse
Rijksuniversiteit volledig vernederlandst te zien.
15 Maart - Invasie van Amerikaanse troepen in Mexico; verjaging van de revolutionaire
generaal Pancho Vila.
24-30 April - Paasopstand in Ierland.
1 Juli - De gezamenlijke Britse en Franse legers voeren een grootscheepse (en tot mislukken
gedoemde) aanval uit op de Duitse stellingen langs de rivier de Somme. Alleen al op deze
dag verliezen vele tienduizenden soldaten het leven.
4 Augustus - Amerika koopt voor 25 miljoen dollar de Maagdeneilanden (in het oostelijke
deel van de Caribische Zee) van Denemarken.
15 September - Voor het eerst worden tanks ingezet op een slagveld. Tijdens de Slag aan
de Somme zetten de Britten 48 Mark I tanks in. Van de 36 die werkelijk de frontlijk
bereiken zijn de meesten binnen korte tijd uitgeschakeld.
18 November - Einde van de Slag aan de Somme.
Albert Einstein publiceert zijn relativiteitstheorie.
Nederland verleent aan Nederlands Indië het recht om een Volksraad te houden met
beperkte, raadgevende bevoegdheden. Van de Indonesische partijen wordt echter niemand
verkozen, zodat de Nederlandse overheid dan maar een aantal mensen uit de Indonesische
elite benoemt.
