Het ministerie Van Heemstra regeert in Nederland (tot 1862).
Abdoel Aziz ibn Mohammed volgt zijn broer Abdoel Medjid op als sultan van het Osmaanse
Rijk. Hij toont zich aanvankelijk hervormingsgezind maar geeft later toe aan spilzucht en een
sterk door de Russische gezant Ignatjew, beïnvloedde camarilla (kliek die achter de schermen
het regeringsbeleid beïnvloed).
Abraham Lincoln is de 17e president van de Verenigde Staten. Hij regeert tot 1865. Hij redt
de Unie tegen de Zuidelijken, schaft de slavernij af en wordt in het laatste jaar van zijn
regering vermoord.
Het koninkrijk Italië wordt uitgeroepen. Giuseppe Verdi wordt in het eerste Italiaanse
parlement gekozen voor de liberale partij.
Januari - In de Bommelerwaard (Nederland) breekt een dijk door. Het gebied wordt hard
getroffen door deze overstroming. Koning Willem III brengt een bezoek aan het
overstroomde gebied.
Guillaume Duchenne - een neuroloog uit Frankrijk - beschrijft uitgebreid een vorm van
spierdystrofie die slechts bij jongens voorkomt en tot de dood leidt. De aandoening zal
later zijn naam dragen als de ziekte van Duchenne.
8 Februari - de Confederate States of America, een groep van zuidelijke afgescheiden
Amerikaanse staten, worden gesticht.
