From
Catherine, daughter of Willem, October 2003:
I found your web site today, and was interested to find my grandparents,
Dirk ten Haaf and Neeltje van den Houten. Their son Willem is my father.
Dirk died in
1963 in Saint John, New Brunswick, and Neeltje died in Montreal,
Quebec in about
1969. My father is still alive -- he was born in Zierikzee on 18
October
1919, and his parents left the Netherlands to live in the United States
in
1920. They also spent some time in Canada. They returned to the Netherlands
on the death of Neeltje's father, and stayed until
1932, when they came to Canada.
They bought a farm near Woodstock, New Brunswick. They moved to Saint
John some time before the Second World War.
My father joined the Canadian Army, and fought in Holland in the fall of
1944.
He and my mother had just been married before he left for Europe He returned
to Canada at the end of the war, and was stationed with his family in Germany
for two years, from
1959 to
1961.
My sister and I met many of our Dutch relatives, including Jacob van den Houten
and his son Adriaan in Arnhem. My parents visited the Netherlands a few years
ago for the 50th anniversary of the liberation.
Thanks to Catherine Allen, daughter of Willem te Haaf.
