REM was an excellent ski. In 1958 he became second in the Dutch youth championships. In 1959 it was even expected that he could be first. Unfortunately it went wrong in his last training Run, on Saturday, January 3, 1959. He threw during his descent a slalom sock, something that happened many times every day. But this time, the then wooden stick with a rough sharpening point, came up reversed in the snow. He could no longer avoid him so that the sharp point, at his stomach region, went through him. Because of the blow he flew through the air and came some meters away, on his back, which also made his legs paralyzed. He was still conscious in the snow on the slope of the Hahnenkamm Berg, pulled the stick out of it, but could not yet be transported to the hospital in St. Johann as the two ambulances were occupied with people with broken legs . He was operated on that same day, later followed by a second operation, to combat an infection. Unfortunately, he was so weakened that he died 10 days after the accident, in the presence of his parents.
